Editeur : | [S.l.] : Forgotten Books, 2012 |
Résumé : |
This translation of Reuss s History of the New Testament, begun three years ago, while the translator was a student in Andover Theological Seminary, and carried on since in the intervals of leisure from other occupations, is now presented to the public, in the hope that it may prove useful to English and American students of the New Testament, as it has already been to those of German speech. The translation has been made from the fifth revised edition (B runswick, 1874), without abridgment, and with the consent of the author. The attempt has been to render the thought as accurately as possible, and at the same time in fairly idiomatic and readable English. The translator has supplemented the bibliography to the best of his ability by inserting, in square brackets, references to English and American literature (with which the author was less familiar), as well as to German and French works which have appeared since the publication of the last edition of the original. He does not flatter himself that these additions are by any means exhaustive, or so complete as they might have been had his resources been greater, but he indulges the hope that they may prove to have increased considerably the value of the book. The index has also been increased to more than twice its proportions in the original. The sincere thanks of the translator are due, and are hereby expressed, to Prof. J. H. Thayer, D. D., of Cambridge, Mass., at whose suggestion the work was originally taken up, and whose encouragement and kindly aid have made it in many a point better than it could otherwise have been. EDWARD L.
