Résumé : |
Marxism, one of the few philosophies that turned into an effective movement, not so long ago was the official ideology in one form or another of much of humanity. It was promulgated, initially by the Soviet Union, then imposed on much of Central and Eastern Europe, later emerged in the People's Republic of China, and gradually spread to other parts of Asia and even bits of Africa and Latin America. Although declining in its initial popularity, it still remains strong in several countries and is supported by numerous communist and other parties and countless individuals around the world. The *Historical Dictionary of Marxism* covers the history of Marxism and all its thinkers and schools of thought in a comprehensive manner. This is done, through a chronology, a list of acronyms and abbreviations, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-reference dictionary entries on basic terms and concepts, significant thinkers and doers, and also the parties and countries that followed it. ### Review A brave...highly informative, thoughtfully provocative overview of the chameleon faces of Marxism. Likely to be useful to students of philosophy, and of revolutionary theory and practice. (*Reference Reviews* ) ...the dictionary is remarkably comprehensive. The entries are informative, accurate, clear-eyed, and balanced, avoiding unnecessary jargon....A valuable addition to any reference collection. (*Library Journal, 3/1/2007* ) ...a perfect reference for any school teaching Marxist history and theory. (*California Bookwatch, March 2007* ) This Historical Dictionary is an invaluable tool for all those interested in Marxism. Comprehensive and detailed, it is complemented by a superb bibliography. (Professor David McLellan, Author of Karl Marx, His Life and Thought ) Walker (politics, U. of Newcastle, UK) and Gray (National Library of Scotland, UK) present a dictionary of Marxism that offers concise explanations of major theoretical and political figures, organizations, schools of thought, and events related to the historical development of Marxism (conceived broadly) in cross-referenced alphabetical entries. In addition to the entries and the introductory historical essay, the dictionary also contains a guide to acronyms and abbreviations, a chronology, and a bibliography.
